[ACML] Convention commercials

I was wondering when this might filter it's way to this list. Believe me,
the fuss is a surprise to many of us. The commercial was up for multiple
months before 4-chan got a hold of it to pick on the "girugamesh"
kid-spawning some funny parodies-and others our volunteer video coordinator
had pulled because of profanity/pornography (not what we like associated
with our con eh?). I'd appreciate it if folks would honor our
trademarks/copyrights and not distribute those. Professional courtesy and
all.

Then it sorta died out. But ANN's chicks on anime took it on this week, and
seemed to have given a last gasp to the fuss. I read through the thread-and
it seems an even split between "this commerical is meh", "this commercial is
an outrage" and "wtf, what is wrong with you people-it's just a commercial"
and even a smattering of "Hey, I liked it". :)

For our part, the commercial was made for us by Vic, who's been doing this
for us since 2007-to generally decent review. It wasn't meant to be
anything but a quick way to get out some info and get people to the
website-nothing more nothing less. Not satire or a parody.

Any one that knows Vic knows he's an upbeat guy-so while the commercials
over the years may be a bit cheesy/campy-they are never supposed to make fun
of anyone. He wanted to do this particular one for a few years now because
he's friends with the Japanese chef-and thought he could get more info into
it (people have criticized him for not telling more of what is actually at
the con), etc. It was also cheap to produce as he uses all volunteers.

But you win some you lose some. Last year's commercial was pretty
popular-and most people seemed to like it-with a smattering of negatives.
This year seems possibly to be reversed. Though oddly enough, the first
months of comments were not negative or mean-so "spin" certainly is in place
and our sponsors who ran the ad actually said they liked it. But what can
we really say, but "sorry if you didn't like it"?

In anycase, our convention is nearly 75% up on pre-reg (which is something
we've never seen before and weren't expecting in this economy) and doing
great, either in spite of or helped by the commercial. I guess that's just a
matter of perspective. :)

We are very busy trying to finalize our plans for our con-so I would really
appreciate it if we could drop the topic-there's been a lot said already
(folks can share on ANN if they care too) and we have a con to run. I don't
think I have to tell anyone here how tough it is the final weeks before your
event!

But, if anyone wants to ask questions or help us out with any suggestions
I'd be happy to field them off list.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind Regards as always,

Mira
