YMMV,

Amen to that one, Stephanie! If I have one piece of hard won knowledge to
pass along, it's don't let the hotel have the upper hand. Bring along a
strong negotiator when you work out a new contract. Join groups like this one
that has some expert and experienced advice. Ask other cons for some boiler
plate that they have from their good contracts. Go to a SMOFcon once before you
try a new venture in the world of fan-run conventions. You don't have to
re-invent the wheel, you only need to adjust it's rotation to how you want your
event to run. And most especially do not let the hotel tell you what you
have to do, because there are other hotels out there who will do what you want
them to do. Play hotels against one another for your dollars. (I know,
there are smaller places in this world where that is all but impossible, but if
you can do it, try.)
On that note: I know this is an "invitees" forum. Is there an open forum
where very new individuals can ask these kinds of questions? I'm wondering if
that con wiki, that Isaac recommended, isn't a place for this kind of group
to place an "invitation". It might also lead to some fantastic, on the ball,
really energetic and interesting volunteers.
